TYPE WITH PLACE
Irreproachable
In his whole life, Javert tried not to be a good man, but to be irreproachable. Unfortunately, that was just a dream of his.
TYPE WITH PLACE
Void
Being caught and spared by Jean Valjean, a criminal he had been chasing after for life long, Javert started questioning his belief in law. Is law really as flawless as he always believed?
When this doubt stared growing in his heart, he saw no meaning in this world. They’re all void.
TYPE WITH IMAGE
Bohemian
Javert become a law officer on the basis of "an irrepressible hatred for that bohemian race to which he used to belong".
TYPE WITH TEXTURE
To be or not to be
Mercy or justice? Imperfect law or perfect law? These are the questions that created a turmoil in Javert’s heart that led him into his suicide.
THE STORY
Inspector Javert
Inspector Javert is a beloved character from one of my favorite novel and musical, Les Misérables.
This is a project to explore him with typography by manipulating type with images, places and textures.
After exploring the types, I designed 4 spreads of experimental newspapers to enhance the understanding of readers towards this character.
TYPE WITH IMAGE
Stars
Javert takes law as his guiding stars. He proudly announced that he is the loyalest servant of law. However, he is actually a slave of the law.*
TYPE WITH TEXTURE
Javert
Javert is born from the bottom of the society - in prison, and there, he saw this society permanently closes its door between two types of person: the ones attack the law, and the ones obey it. While himself, is outside of this system, he wants to be the guard of the law.
